Balmaseda, the first town in Bizkaia, founded in 1199, is a town that fiercely protects its traditions, as demonstrated by the affection with which it celebrates its Living Passion Play. We are a town that has inherited from its ancestors the responsibility of making others feel the final hours of Jesus’ life.
The main activity takes place on Holy Thursday night and Good Friday morning, during which the reenactment of the last moments in the life of Jesus of Nazareth unfolds. This living Passion Play takes place in the streets and squares of the town.
The Passion Play has been performed live since the late 19th century and has evolved over time, incorporating different characters and settings, thus achieving the realism and emotional depth that characterize it.
